Glacier Kayak Paddle & Trek
Experience the magnificent Mendenhall Glacier and Lake from a series of unparalleled vantage points with your own private guide on Southeast Alaska’s singular multi-sport glacial adventure! Begin at the edge of Mendenhall Lake for this family-friendly adventure. After your gear outfitting, kayak orientation, and safety briefing, point your bow toward the awe-inspiring glacier ahead and paddle on this silt-rich lake with glowing blue icebergs of all shapes and sizes and reflections of the grand peaks of the Coastal Mountain Range. Mendenhall Lake offers the unique experience of paddling near icebergs, nesting cliffs, and giant waterfalls. Don’t forget to look toward the shorelines, mountains, and sky around you for possible wildlife sightings – mountain goats, black bear, porcupine, river otter, beaver, eagles, loons, and Arctic terns all inhabit this area!Upon reaching the beach landing site near the glacier’s edge, trade your paddles for trekking poles. Leave your sea legs behind and venture to the glacier and onto the ice, taking a journey through time as your expert guides help you explore accessible features such as crevasses, ice caves, moulins, melt water streams, and pools. Based on your group’s interest, pace, time restrictions, and ice conditions, top-roped ice climbing on a near-vertical face may also be a possible component of your glacier exploration! After your trek, return to your boats and paddle across the lake once more, allowing the visually stunning experience to wash over you before returning to the lake’s edge.
